'Hall Pass' Slips Past 'Gnomeo' to Win Soft Weekend

Warner Bros.

The Farrelly brothers' R-rated film earns $13.5 mil - while the animated flick made a close $13.4.

A softer-than-expected Sunday resulted in Disney’s Gnomeo & Juliet narrowly losing the weekend box office race to New Line/Warner Bros.’ Hall Pass, the new R-rated comedy from the Farrelly brothers.

Gnomeo grossed $13.4 million, compared to the $14.2 million estimated on Sunday.

Conversely, Hall Pass did slightly better than estimated, grossing roughly $13.5 million in its opening weekend. Sunday estimates showed the comedy grossing $13.4 million.

The switch-up is good news for New Line, since it’s always better to open at No. 1. At the same time, Hall Pass still underperformed. Heading into the weekend, tracking showed the film opening at least several million dollars higher.
