'Hamilton's America': All the Songs Performed by Original Broadway Cast in the PBS Doc
"There is a long tradition of using the word 'immigrant' as an epithet of distrust of the latest group of people who have gotten here," said Miranda. "We have to survive it. And if it bothers you, vote."
After the world premiere of the PBS documentary special Hamilton’s America, which airs Oct. 21 on PBS and Facebook Live, Lin-Manuel Miranda took a moment to urge the show’s fans to vote in the upcoming presidential election.
“There is a long tradition of using the word ‘immigrant’ as an epithet of distrust of the latest group of people who have gotten here," he which took place Saturday night at the New York Film Festival in response to an audience question, alongside Renee Elise Goldsberry, biographer Ron Chernow and doc director Alex Horwitz. "It is a very easy thing to do for a politician — it happens every 20 years of so, usually happens around the election cycle where you point at the people who got here most recently and say, ‘They’re the reason you don’t have a job.'
"It happened with the Irish at the turn of the 19th century, it’s happening with Mexican-Americans right now, and this is about as virulent a form of this virus as I’ve seen in my lifetime," he continued. "We have to survive it. And if it bothers you, vote.”
The doc, which charts the creation of the musical juggernaut and the history of its real-life subject, goes into the many rooms where it happened, from historical landmarks like Aaron Burr’s bedroom at the Morris-Jumel Mansion (where Miranda composed parts of the musical) and George Washington’s Mount Vernon home to the Broadway show’s opening-night party, at which Miranda celebrated by freestyling with The Roots. At various locations, Miranda also interviews his father, President Barack Obama, Nas, Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman.
But most Hamilton fans — especially those who haven’t seen the production — will be satisfied that it goes into the Richard Rodgers Theatre itself, where multiple live performances were taped with the original Broadway cast, including the now-departed Tony winners and nominees Miranda, Goldsberry, Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Daveed Diggs and Jonathan Groff. Though only portions of each number are included, below is a list of all the performed songs that appear within the doc. (Bonus: Stay until the end to see Miranda and Goldsberry freestyling, plus a special “and Peggy” shout-out.)
