HandMade's kidding on 'Eloise'

HandMade Films has found its Eloise for the upcoming adaptation of the children's book "Eloise in Paris": Australian actress Jordana Beatty.

HandMade anticipates an ongoing franchise for the character based on the books written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight that tell the adventures of Eloise, a precocious young girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel in New York with her dog, turtle and nanny.

"Eloise in Paris," helmed by Charles Shyer ("Father of the Bride"), is co-written by Shyer with his daughter Hallie Meyers- Shyer and Larry Spencer.

Sydney native Beatty, 9, who has been acting in television and commercials since age 4, was discovered after more than 4,000 girls from four continents auditioned for the role. "Jordana is a unique combination of funny, feisty, sweet and soulful — all the qualities that were so much the essence of Kay Thompson's iconic character," Shyer said.

Uma Thurman has been cast as Nanny. Principal photography begins Aug. 12 in Paris, New York and the south of France.

Producing are Patrick Meehan, Thomas D. Adelman and Ron Rotholz. Shyer also will executive produce.
