This Is the Haircare Line Used on Superheroes

Hanz de Fuko has super-hold products that make it a go-to for stylists working on the sets of 'Avengers' and 'Iron Man.'

"You better believe when a superhero removes their helmet after some intergalactic world destruction he can’t have a single strand out of place," says hairstylist Quan Pierce, master educator for Hanz de Fuko and on-set stylist for Avengers: Infinity War, due out next year. He's been using Hanz de Fuko's super strong-hold formulas on Chris Evans, Don Cheadle and Anthony Mackie to keep their locks as perfect as Robert Downey Jr.'s in the Iron Man films, for which he redesigned the actor’s goatee.

The Los Angeles-inspired and -based brand is not used only for supernatural purposes, as the likes of David Beckham, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Hugh Jackman, James Marsden and Calvin Harris are also fans of its all-natural formulas featuring organic ingredients (no paragons or sulfates). But Downey may be the best poster child for it, or his Tony Stark goatee, which Pierce conceived and redesigned for a flashback sequence at the beginning of Iron Man 3.

The issue of hold makes a compelling case for Pierce, who uses Claymation ($19.50) — a product that he says "contains all the best parts of your favorite sculpting clay combined with a secret blend of natural waxes" — to set and style hair in forms that give it hold and direction during action sequences (think Jackman and McAvoy). Because, as he says, "Why be indestructible if you can’t look good doing it?"

The stylist can't pick his favorite Hanz de Fuko product — "That’s like picking a favorite superhero," he quips — but he has some go-tos. His arsenal always contains Gel Triq ($20), Modify Pomade ($19.50) and Hybridized Wax ($19.50) to keep every character’s signature style picture-perfect. The latter is his pick for when "Superman has to stop a speeding train — it's guaranteed its medium hold keeps that signature curl in place every time," says Pierce.

Thor would get Sponge Wax ($19.50), he says, because of its pliability and staying power with a matte finish ("for that fresh out of bed look everyone loves so much"). Quicksand ($19.50) is for Captain America, Pierce says, "revitalizing that slept-on hair as a combination of styling wax and dry shampoo," and he would also use it to create volume for Storm (and Beckham uses it).

The product — like the rest of the range — contains interesting ingredients such as diatomaceous earth, which is literally from volcanoes. "It allows me to create volume from the root to mid-shaft and acts like a dry shampoo to remove oils from the scalp," says the stylist. (It’s great for styling wigs, too.) And while they look good and smell good, too, it’s the function that is most appealing about Hanz de Fuko. As Pierce says, "When the fate of mankind is unraveling, your hairstyle better not be."
