Happy ending for 'Fairytale'

MUNICH -- One of the most successful German films of the year, World Cup soccer documentary "Germany. A Summer Fairytale," has won the Pierrot, the audience award at the Bavarian Film Prize.

The film, which follows the German national team through last summer's World Cup tournament in Germany, had been disqualified from consideration for a Lola -- the nation's top film prize -- because it was shown on television in December.

With almost 4 million tickets sold and an audience of 10 million television viewers -- a share of 31.1% -- Soenke Wortmann's feel-good documentary far outstrips the audience of any other non-fiction film in the history of Germany, including the very popular Michael Moore movies.

Wortmann will be presented with the award at a Jan. 19 gala in Munich.
