'Harry Potter' conjures up $58.4 mil

'Dark Knight' maintains first-day crown

"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" has gotten off to a full-blooded debut, with $58.4 million in boxoffice rung up during just its first day of domestic release.

That's the second-best Wednesday tally ever, after the $62 million first-day gross for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" on June 24.

Warners' 2008 blockbuster "The Dark Knight" rung up the most first-day coin of any release. Bowing on a Friday, "Dark Knight" registered a mind-bending $67.2 million last July 18.

The next "Dark Knight" comparison to "Prince" will be its five-day record. The Batman sequel fetched $203.8 million over its first five days -- a Friday-through-Tuesday span -- and $533.3 overall domestically.
