'Harry Potter' on EFA's People's Choice list

Majority of nominees are local boxoffice champs

COLOGNE, Germany -- A diminutive British wizard is the 800-pound gorilla in this year's popularity contest for favorite European film.

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" is among the nominees announced Friday for the People's Choice trophy at the 2008 European Film Awards.

The tentpole production stands out in a lineup that includes an array of mostly local hits, including French comedy smash "Welcome to the Sticks," Scandinavian crusader epic "Arn," German romantic comedy "Rabbit Without Ears" and Spanish horror titles "The Orphanage" and "[REC]."

Joe Wright's World War I epic "Atonement" also has been nominated, making a British winner this year a strong possibility. European film fans can vote for their favorites at the EFA Web site, www.peopleschoiceaward.org.

The winner will be announced Dec. 6 at the 21st annual European Film Awards in Copenhagen.
