HBO India dials up 'Mumbai Calling'

Comedy is channel's first locally produced series

NEW DELHI -- On Saturday, HBO India will bow the comedy "Mumbai Calling," its first locally produced series.

The English-language series is produced by U.K.-based Allan McKeown Presents and also will air in Britain on ITV. Mumbai-based Grey Cells Entertainment served as production partner.

"Calling" centers on the Teknobable call center in Mumbai "where England has outsourced its mundane day-to-day problems to a team of tech-savvy university graduates."

The show features British-Indian actors Sanjeev Bhaskar ("The Kumars at No. 42") and Nitin Ganatra ("Bride and Prejudice"), along with British TV actress Daisy Beaumont ("East Enders").

The show "has a strong regional flavor and a unique plot that Indians can relate to quite easily," Shruti Bajpai, HBO Asia country manager South Asia, said Thursday.
