Jessica Edwards' film about the legendary singer debuted at the SXSW Film Festival.

HBO has picked up U.S. TV rights to Jessica Edwards’ documentary Mavis!, which takes a look at the life of gospel/soul singer Mavis Staples. Brooklyn-based production company Film First also announced that Films We Like has acquired all rights for Canada.

The film, which had its world premiere at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, tells the story of Staples, now 75, and her family group, The Staple Singers.

The deals were negotiated by Josh Braun and David Koh of Submarine on behalf of the filmmakers.

The film will next screen at the upcoming Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, Hot Docs and the Montclair Film Festival, which will include a post-screening conversation with Staples and Stephen Colbert.
