HBO and Telefonica's Movistar Sign Deal

Game of Thrones Episode 9 - H 2014

The move is part of the Spanish telecom's strategy to beef up its content offer.

Movistar and HBO announced an agreement Thursday that sees Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, In Treatment and Girls join the online offer of Telefonica's online VOD service.

The Spanish upstart, which doubled its subscriber base last year to 2 million, will offer the first three seasons of Game of Thrones and the first four seasons of Boardwalk. Three seasons each of In Treatment and Girls also will be available.

The announcement comes on the heels of Telefonica Spain president Luis Miguel Gilperez's comments at the presentation of the new motorcycles for the Movistar Yamaha team Wednesday, in which he said the company planned to expand its content acquisition in 2015 in terms of sports rights, film and TV series.

Telefonica is ramping up ahead of expected competition from Vodafone, which has acquired Spain's ONO.
