Hillary Clinton Says "Creep" Trump Made Her Skin Crawl in Excerpt From Election Book
"Maybe I have over-learned the lesson of staying calm, biting my tongue, digging my fingernails into a clinched fist, smiling all the while, determined to present a composed face to the world."
Morning Joe released an excerpt from Hillary Clinton's upcoming book about the election, entitled What Happened, on Wednesday.
"In this book, I write about moments from the campaign that I wish I could go back and do over," Clinton writes. "If the Russians could hack my subconscious, they'd find a long list."
In the Morning Joe excerpt, the former Secretary of State talks about Trump following her on stage during their presidential debate in St. Louis.
"It was incredibly uncomfortable," she wrote. "He was literally breathing down my neck. My skin crawled. It was one of those moments where you wish you could hit pause and ask everyone watching, 'Well, what would you do?' Do you stay calm, keep smiling and carry on as if he weren’t repeatedly invading your space? Or do you turn, look him in the eye and say, loudly and clearly, 'Back up you creep.'"
Clinton chose to do the former, saying she kept her cool "aided by a lifetime of dealing with difficult men trying to throw me off."
She contemplated what it would have been like to instead, have called Trump out. "Maybe I have over-learned the lesson of staying calm, biting my tongue, digging my fingernails into a clenched fist, smiling all the while, determined to present a composed face to the world," wrote Clinton.
The book is set to hit shelves Sept. 12.
