Hitched, Hatched, Hired

Inside the industry's celebrations and news.

DEATHS: Etta James, 1938-2012; Johnny Otis, 1921-2012: Etta James was just a kid in San Francisco when she got a call from famed bandleader Johnny Otis in 1955. He was sending a cab for her trio, Etta James and the Peaches, so they could audition for him. Soon, James was forging her mom's signature on a permission note and boarding Otis' tour bus with the Peaches for a recording session in Los Angeles. He wrote her first hit, the 1955 R&B chart-topper "The Wallflower" (aka "Roll With Me Henry"). James' feisty six-decade career included the lush 1961 ballad "At Last," a top-10 pop hit; Otis would write and record 1958's "Willie and the Hand Jive" and help popularize black music in California as a DJ on radio and TV. They died within three days and 50 miles of each other, Otis at age 90 on Jan. 17 and James at 73 on Jan. 20. – Mike Barnes
