Hollinger is upped to COO at Discovery

Longtime Discovery Communications executive Mark Hollinger has been promoted to the newly created position of COO.

The 16-year company veteran most recently was president of global businesses and operations and general counsel. In his new role, Hollinger will assume responsibility for Discovery Studios, including the Discovery Films unit and Discovery's internal content production operations.

Additionally, the COOs from Discovery's businesses, while continuing to report directly to the presidents of their operating units, will now become functional reports to Hollinger.

Hollinger will also oversee Discovery Networks International and Discovery Commerce and manage Corporate Operations, including information technology, media services, administration, business affairs, corporate communications, corporate marketing and research and production management. He also will oversee Discovery's legal, government affairs and standards and practices functions while the company searches for a new general counsel.

Hollinger reports to Discovery Communications president and CEO David Zaslav.

"Today's announcement codifies what has been the reality for a long time: Mark is the operational leader of this company," Zaslav said Thursday.

Hollinger joined Discovery Communications in 1991 as vp and deputy general counsel. Before joining Discovery, he was a senior associate in the entertainment department of the New York-based law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.
