I want to welcome you all to Jerry Weintraub’s second bar mitzvah!” That’s how HBO co-president Richard Plepler opened the screening and afterparty on the Paramount lot for the premium cable channel’s new documentary His Way, which premieres April 4 and recounts the five-decade career of the legendary (and popular) producer. The event had the feel of a homecoming, with stars Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle and Ellen Barkin from Weintraub’s Ocean’s film trilogy turning out, along with hosts Plepler and Michael Lombardo of HBO, CAA’s Kevin Huvane and doc producer and Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter. A cavalcade of Hollywood’s elite also came to honor Weintraub, including his pals Steve Bing, Sharon Stone, Bruce Willis and Sidney Poitier. The 73-year-old music promoter/movie producer/author looked around the soiree and announced: “It’s my life — of course it’s fantastic! That’s what I told HBO when we screened the film for them. And they agreed.”
