Hollywood's 'Greatest Gift Giver's' Guide to the Holidays
Casey Patterson, whom Dwayne Johnson calls the "greatest gift giver in the world," opens her gift closet before the holidays.
Live events whiz Casey Patterson has executive produced One Night Only specials with Eddie Murphy and Alec Baldwin, A Very Murray Christmas and the MTV Movie Awards. On top of her ability to herd celebrities on a live set, she’s also known to have a penchant for presents. One surprise Patterson package prompted Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to proclaim that she’s the “greatest gift giver in the world.”
A peek into a selection of her recent offerings:
The Rock + Superman
Patterson gave Johnson a custom Superman suit just before his Rock the Troops special aired in December 2016. Through connections at Warner Bros., she says, “they were kind enough to allow us to custom make one for him, um, in his size.” He posted on Instagram how Patterson brought the suit into his trailer: “She didn’t give it to me to wear in our show, but rather she wanted me to know that this is how she sees me in real life.” The producer says she has “a fortunate and unique perspective on just how rare and extraordinary he is in front of and behind the camera. He moves mountains, leaps tall buildings in a single bound every day.”
Fried-chicken cake + custom Balenciaga denim jackets for Chrissy Teigen and daughter Luna
Lip Sync Battle star and model Chrissy Teigen was “secretly pregnant” while she and Patterson worked on the show together, remembers the producer. “She was having cravings, so we had a giant fried-chicken cake made for her — the cake was corn bread, the frosting was mashed potatoes, the filling gravy.” More recently, Patterson had matching mommy-and-me denim Balenciaga jackets made with images of Chrissy on one and daughter Luna on the other. “I chose Balenciaga because in our first year of working together, we were filming in the winter in New York and Chrissy lived in this really beautiful Balenciaga leather jacket. I always think of her in it, so it was a sentimental choice for her and Luna.”
ROE caviar for studio heads + VIPs
“Caviar is one of my favorite gifts because the reaction is always how much people love it and never buy it for themselves,” says Patterson of the ROE caviar (Ron Meyer's daughter Sarah is a cofounder) that’s one of her go-to gifts for execs and talent alike. “It's a special occasion thing, a nice little reminder to do something festive.” She also digs the un-fussy wooden box it comes in. “It’s cool and low-key.” Among the recipients of the delicacy: Jimmy Fallon, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, John Legend, Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, as well as CAA’s Bryan Lourd, Paramount Network’s Kevin Kay, attorney Craig Jacobson, UTA’s Martin Lesak, producer Don Mischer and director Beth McCarthy-Miller.
Moët Champagne Machine
Casey Patterson Entertainment’s downtown Manhattan office features a Moët Champagne vending machine that requires custom gold tokens and dispenses mini bottles of Moët. “We commissioned the Moët machine like a piece of art,” says Patterson, who now also has it in her VIP gift rotation. “We did it to celebrate the launch of our New York offices and have since had many requests. We are producing one as a surprise for a celebrity for New Year’s.”
LL Cool J and Louis Vuitton turntable + LV Supreme bag
“LL appreciates fashion and art, and he is known for his style and always being fashion-forward,” says Patterson, who works closely with the rapper on Lip Sync Battle, and snagged two coveted, limited-edition Louis Vuitton pieces for him — the vinyl turntable and the Supreme duffel bag. “I knew he would appreciate the collaboration between Supreme and LV. The Supreme Collection was rumored for a long time but premiered at Paris Fashion Week Fall/Winter ’17. They were planning to release to the public at pop-up shops and then the demand and the lines were so vast that they canceled it all and only distributed to VIPs.”
“Netflix & Chill” / N.Y.-themed boxes
Last year, Patterson created custom holiday boxes for her staff with, she says, “everything laid out for them, so it’s giving them the gift of time.” The “Netflix & Chill” packages included a stay at Topping Rose House in the Hamptons, an Apple TV, a year’s Netflix subscription, customized J.Crew PJs, and a Frette cashmere blanket. “I wanted to plan a getaway where everything was taken care of for them, so that they could check out and rest from all of the work and reflect on how much they had accomplished.” Patterson also puts together N.Y.-themed packages for other VIPs — this year’s “retro-Studio 54” version includes a record player, vinyl favorites and a Polaroid camera.
