PIRATES 'Wanted'

Police on Wednesday shut down a large illegal production facility in the Moscow region, seizing about 500,000 pirated DVDs, all of which bore the Universal logo. According to a spokesman for the Moscow police's organized crime department, the pirates' ledgers showed that they already had produced and sold more than 1 million copies of Timur Bekmambetov's "Wanted." Forty people were detained.


Sony is kicking off the new year with a direct-to-video sequel to "Open Season," which generated more than $190 million at the worldwide boxoffice. "Open Season 2," from Sony Pictures Animation, will be released Jan. 27 on DVD, Blu-ray Disc and PSP. The CG-animated feature stars Crispin Glover and Jane Krakowski.


Image Entertainment, following through on its promise to distribute more cast-driven feature films, has acquired nontheatrical North American rights to the comedy "$5 a Day" and the romantic thriller "The Edge of Love" at the Toronto International Film Festival. DVD and Blu-ray Disc release dates have not been set. "$5 a Day" stars Sharon Stone and Christopher Walken; "The Edge of Love," scheduled to be released theatrically by Lionsgate in first-quarter 2009, stars Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller.
