EmptyNETFLIX ups COST FOR BLU-ray discs
Netflix on Wednesday said it will begin adding $1 to monthly membership fees to provide unlimited access to high-definition Blu-ray Disc movies. In an e-mail to subscribers, Netflix said the additional charge, to reflect the higher cost of Blu-ray discs, will be automatically added to billing statements on or after Nov. 5. Subscribers who do not wish to get Blu-ray access must adjust their accounts through the Netflix Web site.
Another direct-to-video sequel to 1992's "Beethoven" will be the next release in Universal's DVD Originals line, the studio was set to announce today. "Beethoven's Big Break," which hits stores Dec. 30, is the fourth DTV release in the franchise.
LIBERATION GOES RETRO
Independent supplier Liberation Entertainment is banking on nostalgia to fuel sales of two new DVD movies featuring two of the main stars of the original "Beverly Hills, 90210" TV series. The romantic comedy "Kiss the Bride," with Tori Spelling, and the action thriller "Kiss Me Deadly," starring Shannen Doherty, will be out Nov. 18. The former enjoyed a limited theatrical release last year; the latter is a TV movie.
GAIAM GETS A 'PRINCESS'
Gaiam continues its newly launched assault on the DVD market with the ABC Family original movie "Princess," slated for release Feb. 3. The film attracted a big teen audience when it premiered in the spring on ABC.
