New 'Musical'

A year after scoring big on the DVD sales chart with "High School Musical," Walt Disney Home Entertainment is going back to the till. "High School Musical: The Concert Extreme Access Pass" DVD reaches stores June 26. The disc carries performances from the recent 42-city "High School Musical" road show and contains live renditions of hits from the original film's soundtrack.

HD DVD milestone

U.S. consumers have now snapped up more than 100,000 next-generation HD-DVD players, the North American HD DVD Promotional Group reports. The figure does not include sales of PCs equipped with HD DVD drives or Xbox 360 HD DVD add-ons. That's good news for Toshiba, the first and most prolific HD DVD supporter (the only other company with a dedicated set-top player is RCA).

'Flipper' donation

In time for the April 24 DVD release of the first season of "Flipper," MGM Home Entertainment is donating $10,000 to the Marine Mammal Center, a nonprofit veterinary hospital, research and educational center dedicated to helping ill and injured marine mammals. The donation was made to the center's capital campaign fund to help expand its hospital headquarters.

DVD birthday

The Entertainment Merchants Assn. will host a 10-year anniversary celebration for the Home Theater Forum at its 26th annual home entertainment convention and trade show July 17-19 in Las Vegas. Members of the Web site were instrumental in talking up DVD in the format's early days.
