Empty'Home Run' for MGM
With baseball season in full swing, MGM Home Entertainment is digging into the vaults and prepping "Home Run Derby" for DVD release. The show aired from 1959-61 and pitted nine future Hall of Famers — including Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron and Ernie Banks — against one another in a nine-inning home-run contest. Volume 1 arrives in stores July 10; volumes 2 and 3 will be released during the baseball season.
Two rock 'n' roll pioneers will be honored on DVD in the summer. Koch Vision on Aug. 14 will release the PBS "American Masters" tribute to Les Paul, a month after its broadcast date. "Les Paul: Chasing Sound!" is a feature-length documentary on the legendary guitar wizard, shot entirely in high-definition. The program features classic footage of the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley and other greats. A few weeks earlier, on July 10, Palm Pictures will bow "You're Gonna Miss Me," a film about eccentric 13th Floor Elevators frontman Roky Erickson, a cult figure long revered in classic rock circles.
Jack Kyser, known as the "guru of the Los Angeles economy," will deliver the luncheon keynote at the sixth annual Home Entertainment Summit: DVD and Beyond, a two-day conference taking place June 18-19 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Century City. Kyser, chief economist for the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp., will speak on the impact of the film industry on the Los Angeles economy. The summit is produced by Home Media Magazine with The Hollywood Reporter, DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group and the Entertainment Merchants Assn.
