home video digest
'Tis the season for anniversary DVDs. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing a 15th anniversary edition of "Groundhog Day" on Jan. 29 and a 25th anniversary edition of "Tootsie" on Feb. 5. "Groundhog," digitally remastered under the supervision of director Harold Ramis, includes featurettes, commentary from Ramis and newly discovered deleted scenes. The "Tootsie" DVD, also digitally remastered, includes never-before-seen deleted scenes, a making-of documentary and star Dustin Hoffman's original screen test.
Fox is preparing a second direct-to-DVD sequel to 1998's theatrical hit "Dr. Dolittle," which starred Eddie Murphy. Murphy reprised his leading role in the 2001 theatrical sequel "Dr. Dolittle 2," but the third installment, in 2006, found Murphy sitting out and was released directly to video. "Dr. Dolittle: Tail to the Chief," like its predecessor, stars Kyla Pratt as Maya Dolittle, the good doctor's daughter who can talk to animals just like her father. It premieres March 4 on DVD.
HD DVD rallies
Amid research that finds the next-generation format war tilted toward Blu-ray Disc comes this from the Diffusion Group: Of U.S. households planning to buy an HDTV as well as a high-definition disc player in the next six months, 43% likely will buy an HD DVD machine, while just 27% plan on buying a Blu-ray player, with the remaining 30% undecided. Diffusion Group president Michael Greeson said that this next wave of HDTV buyers consists of mass-market consumers rather than early adopters.
