Hong Kong Box Office: 'Cold War 2' Breaks Record for Chinese-Language Films

The action-packed sequel has raked in over $8.48 million since its July 8 bow.

Cold War 2, starring Aaron Kwok, Tony Leung Ka-fai and Chow Yun-fat, has become the highest-grossing Chinese-language film of all time in Hong Kong.

The action-packed thriller overtook the previous record set by Taiwanese romantic comedy You Are of the Apple of My Eye in 2011, having raked in over $8.48 million since its July 8 bow. The film has grossed over $115 million worldwide to date.

Hong Kong's Edko produced and distributed the sequel to the 2012 award-winning blockbuster, which also was directed by Longman Leung and Sunny Luk, and in so doing, reclaimed the title of the top-grossing Chinese-language film for a Hong Kong production.

Previous record-holders include Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle in 2004, which took $7.87 million in the territory, and Shaolin Soccer, also directed by and starring Chow, which tallied $7.8 million in 2001.

The distributor of Cold War 2 is planning to extend its theatrical run through August for the film to reach the target box office of $9 million (HK$70 million).
