Hong Kong Disneyland appoints GM

Andrew Kam expected to boost visitor numbers

HONG KONG -- Andrew Kam, a 20-year veteran of Coca-Cola, was named Hong Kong Disneyland's managing director on Thursday, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts said.

Starting at the end of August, Kam will assume oversight of the operations and business development of the struggling resort that opened in September 2005. Kam takes over from Dave Vermeulen, who will remain executive vp.

At COFCO Coca-Cola Beverages, Kam marketed and sold Coca-Cola across China, rising to the position of deputy GM and marketing & sales director. Kam previously was the chief China representative of the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Hong Kong Disneyland had 4 million visitors from October 2006-September 2007, below its expected attendance.

Kam's appointment comes on the heels of the strengthening of a key free trade agreement between China and Hong Kong that will allow nonresidents of southern China working in the region to visit Hong Kong Disneyland.

Much hope is put on Kam's ability to leverage his China experience to expand the Disney brand and attract Chinese tourists to the theme park, a Disney spokesperson said.
