Hong Kong International Film Festival to Spotlight Peter Chan Ho-sun

The "Wu Xia" director will have 12 of his titles screened during the 15-day event next year.

HONG KONG – The Warlords and Wu Xia director-producer Peter Chan Ho-sun will be the Filmmaker in Focus at the 36th Hong Kong International Film Festival next March.

The HKIFF will celebrate the Hong Kong filmmaker’s achievements through a series of screenings, seminars, an exhibition and the publication of a special catalog during the 2012 festival, held March 21-April 5, 2012.

Twelve of Chan’s works will be featured in a special sidebar at the festival, including his debut Alan & Eric: Between Hello and Goodbye (1991), his UFO (United Filmmakers Organization) era classics such as Tom, Dick & Hairy (1993), He's A Woman, She's A Man (1994), and Comrades, Almost A Love Story (1996), as well as more recent films, namely, horror flick Three: Going Home (2002), the musical Perhaps Love (2005), blockbuster The Warlords (2007), and the awards-sweeping Bodyguards and Assassins (2009).

The festival will also pay tribute to Chan through a “Face to Face” seminar presented by the Jockey Club Cine Academy on 3 April 2012 that will feature Chan as the guest of honor, and the publication of a bi-lingual study of the filmmaker with interviews and essays.

Self-proclaimed “producer first, director second," Chan has nonetheless made his name with Alan and Eric: Between Hello and Goodbye, starring Eric Tsang in a Hong Kong Film Awards best actor award-winning role. He subsequently co-founded UFO with Tsang and producer Claudie Chung, the company recognized for its films on yuppiedom during the later stage of the second Golden Age of Hong Kong cinema in the 1990s. He was then recruited by Steven Spielberg’s Dreamworks to helm the romantic comedy The Love Letter, starring the latter’s wife Kate Capshaw, in 1999.

Known for his business acumen as well as accolade garnering directorial flair, which saw Chan twice-named as the best director at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards with Perhaps Love and The Warlords, Chan has turned his gaze towards the mammoth Chinese market in recent years. Chan became one of the first Hong Kong members of the 100 million yuan ($15 million) club in Chinese box office with The Warlords and Bodyguards and Assassins. His latest, Wu Xia, was showcased in the official lineup of Cannes and Busan International Film Festival.
