Hong Kong TV Stations Get Digital Greenlight

ATV and TVB will expand their service to at least 96 percent of HK's population.

HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s Broadcasting Authority gave the go-ahead to local terrestrial networks Asia Television (ATV) and Television Broadcasts (TVB) for the expansion of their digital terrestrial television (DTT) services.

The two networks are required to expand their DTT coverage to reach at least 96% of the Hong Kong population by December 31, 2011, with the deadline of territory-wide coverage extended to June 30, 2012.

DTT services in Hong Kong were launched on December 31, 2007. By the end of last year, the networks had set up a total of six principal stations and 14 fill-in stations for a targeted coverage of 89% of the population, and plan to launch add additional fill-in stations to reach 96% of the population by the end of the year.
