Super Bowl 50's #HotRef on Newfound Fame: "The Guys in the Locker Room Were Giving Me Some Business"
"It was one of those things when it happened, I thought, 'Oh it's just a couple tweets,' but then it got that momentum. It started blowing up."
Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb revealed a mystery guest on Today this morning, and it was none other than "Hot Ref" Clete Blakeman, the Super Bowl referee who managed to attract a great deal of attention on social media during the big game. It was no small feat considering he was sharing the field with some of footballs biggest stars, not to mention Beyonce.
"The Twitter world, the whole social media world went crazy, not over the game, over you!" exclaimed Gifford to Blakeman who arrived wearing his referee uniform. "Were you surprised? Were you thrilled? Were you embarrassed?"
"Actually a little bit of all," Blakeman laughed. "It was one of those things when it happened, I thought, 'Oh it's just a couple tweets,' but then it got that momentum. It started blowing up. The guys in the locker room were giving me some business."
Blakeman then introduced his wife, Katie.
"You've known he's hot for a long time, but how are you dealing with this?" asked Gifford.
"I love it," Katie admitted.
Blakeman then played a game in which he challenged Gifford and Kotb to identify real calls and fake ones. The ladies nailed it, showing off their football knowledge by naming all the calls correctly.
"Well, I am from a football family," noted Gifford.
"We're not stupid!" cried Kotb, asking for more of a challenge. So then Blakeman pulled out a longer set of moves.
"That looks like the nae nae'! Watch me whip, watch me nae nae …" Kotb sang.
Apparently, the "Hot Ref" can dance, too.
