A-list manicurist April Foreman, whose clients include Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, Naomi Watts and Cate Blanchett, says the most in-demand shades are pastels and white-hot chalky hues.

What is the top nail trend for summer?

Muted tones are definitely having a moment. Polishes are pale with just the right amount of punch to liven up your beauty routine.

What are a few of your favorite pastel polishes?

I like Deborah Lippmann’s Spring Buds [a creamy green], Misty Morning [a pale blue-gray] and Like Dreamers Do [a soft taupe]. Jin Soon also has some great muted colors.

Is there one color in particular that you’re using on celebrity clients right now?

I've been doing a lot of white. My current favorite is Bamboo White by Nails Inc. [part of a limited-edition collection in collaboration with Victoria, Victoria Beckham; $25]. The color works for every skin tone, and it looks fresh and modern with pretty much anything you’re wearing. I recently used it on Kerry Washington for a photo shoot — it was so good, we kept it on for every single look. No polish change needed.

What do you like most about the return to classic pastel mani-pedis?

It’s a nice contrast to the over-the-top nail art seen in the past few seasons. With a muted palette, you can still keep it interesting by varying the colors used for your manicure and pedicure — the resulting look is both understated and modern. For example, a sheer white mani paired with a soft blue or subtle lime pedi looks very fresh right now.
