Hume to step back at Fox News

Fox News Channel anchor Brit Hume will take a reduced role at the network following the elections.

Hume won't retire completely but no longer will be Fox News' Washington managing editor and won't anchor the 6 p.m. newscast "Special Report." But the anchor will remain with the network as a panelist on "Fox News Sunday," anchor special events for the channel and also have an office in the Washington bureau.

The Washington Post, which first broke the story, likened Hume's new position to that Tom Brokaw has with NBC. The contract will call for Hume to work about 100 days. Hume wanted to reduce his role to spend more time with his family.

A Fox News spokeswoman declined comment Tuesday.

Hume joined Fox News in 1996. (partialdiff)
