Hundred Authors oppose Bondi plan

Panel would determine which films to reject for funding

LOCARNO, Switzerland -- Italy's Hundred Authors movement on Thursday officially petitioned Minister of Culture Sandro Bondi to abandon plans to set up a committee to help evaluate the artistic value of controversial films that apply for state funding.

Sparked by the screening of a controversial state-funded documentary in Locarno, Bondi's plan would seek input from a group of "wise men" before approving state funding.

But the Hundred Authors group -- which includes many of Italy's best-known authors and screenwriters -- said the plan risks becoming a kind of censorship.
