IATSE 871 picks Humphrey

Missy Humphrey has been elected business agent of IATSE Local 871, a crafts union recently roiled by election disputes.

The IA local is composed of 1,500 script supervisors, production and art department coordinators, teleprompter operators and others. Its separate balloting for board seats was recently overturned by the U.S. Labor Department.

"It's a very diverse group, and I'm very proud to be representing them," Humphrey said. "Everyone has recognized that I am the selected business agent, and it is effective (as) close to immediately as possible."

Results of the balloting were announced Saturday.

Humphrey -- formerly associate executive director of the art directors union, IA Local 800 -- collected 270 votes, or 51%, to 258, or 49%, collected by Andrea Friedland, formerly interim assistant business agent of Local 871.

Nakamura, who helped fill the top staff position following the resignation of business agent Lainie Miller in December, will serve as assistant business agent, Humphrey said.

Voting for board seats earlier this year was voided over procedural issues, and results of new voting are expected in late September. Those standing for election include Local 871 board president Michelle Tedlis.
