'Idiots' sweeps Star awards

Bollywood's most successful film takes home 10 trophies

NEW DELHI -- Bollywood's most successful film, “3 Idiots," swept the 16th annual Star Screen Awards Sunday night, bagging 10 awards including best film and best director for Rajkumar Hirani at a star-studded ceremony held in Mumbai.

Another big winner was the critically acclaimed “Paa,” starring 67-year-old Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, who bagged best actor for his performance as a 12-year-old boy suffering from a rare aging disease. The film's co-star Vidya Balan won best actress for her portrayal as Bachchan's onscreen mother.

“Idiots," which opened December 25, is still running strong after collecting a record $51 million (2.4 billion rupees) from both domestic and international markets within its first 10 days of release.

The film also won Best Screenplay for Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijat Joshi and Vidhu Vinod Chopra; Best Choreographer, Bosco Ceaser; best dialogue, Abhijat Joshi; Best Newcomer – Male, Omi Vaidya; Best Actor in a Comic Role – Male, Omi Vaidya; Best Actor in a Negative Role, Boman Irani; and Popular Choice Award for Best Actor – Female, Kareena Kapoor.

Oscar winner A R Rahman (“Slumdog Millionaire”) won  best music for “Dilli 6,” while most promising debut director went to Nandita Das for “Firaaq."
