'Idol' leads Fox to weekly demo win

NEW YORK -- "American Idol" helped Fox win two nights and the week's adults 18-49 prize, but ABC came within striking distance in the demo, and CBS won the week in viewership.

Last week's two shots of "American Idol" again held the top slots in viewership and the adults 18-49 demographic, according to Nielsen Media Research for the week ending Sunday.

The week started off with "Dancing With the Stars" (19 million, 4.9/13) leading ABC to a Monday primetime viewers win, while "Heroes" (11.9 million, 5.4/13) was still not back to its pre-hiatus highs. But the latter still had enough to beat "CSI: Miami" (17.2 million, 5.1/14) to become the top show in adults 18-49.

Tuesday and Wednesday were all Fox, with Tuesday's combination of "Idol" (26.7 million, 10.2/29) and "House" (21.1 million, 8.8/22) just too much for anything else to compare. The results show for "Dancing" (16.3 million, 4.1/10) put up respectable numbers, as did "Law & Order: SVU" (11.4 million, 4.1/11) in the demographic.

Wednesday was still Fox, with "Bones" (10.6 million, 3.1/10) and "Idol" (28.7 million, 11.0/28) beating everything in its way. Only "Criminal Minds" (13.3 million, 3.5/9) could get double digits against the pair, while "CSI: NY" (13 million, 3.8/10) and ABC's "Lost" (12.3 million, 5.3/14) split the 10 p.m. hour.

ABC took Thursday in a big way with its centerpiece, a two-hour "Grey's Anatomy" (21.2 million, 9.1/24) that beat "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (19 million, 5.6/14) at 9 p.m. But CBS got a win at 8 p.m. with "Survivor: Fiji" (13.7 million, 4.6/14) against "Ugly Betty" (10.7 million, 3.6/11) and Fox's "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" (9 million, 3.1/9). "Grey's" overshadowed the 10 p.m. offerings of "Shark" (12.5 million, 3.1/8) and especially NBC's "ER" (7.8 million, 3.1/8), which had another bad week.

Friday again went to CBS, while Saturday, highlighted by Fox's rain-delayed NASCAR Nextel Cup race, was won by ABC in the demo and CBS in viewers.

Sunday went back to ABC in adults 18-49 with "Desperate Housewives" (17.2 million, 6.6/16), though CBS won the night in viewership on the strength of "Cold Case" (13.7 million, 3.2/8) and "Without a Trace" (14.7 million, 3.7/10). ABC still won at 10 p.m. in the demo with "Brothers & Sisters" (10.8 million, 4.1/11) and at 8 p.m. with "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (11.8 million, 4.4/12).

For the week, CBS averaged 11.2 million viewers and a 3.1/9 in the adults 18-49 demo, followed by ABC (10.7 million, 3.7/11), Fox (10.1 million, 3.9./11), NBC (7.5 million, 2.6/7) and the CW (3.1 million, 1.3/4).
