'Idol' progression hits rare higher note

For the first time in five seasons, "American Idol" ratings went up for the second episode.

Wednesday's "Idol" was flat among total viewers (30.3 million viewers) compared with Tuesday's opener but grew 1% in adults 18-49 (11.8 national rating). That might not sound like much, but usually "Idol" drops on Night 2.

During the past four years, the Wednesday "Idol" premiere has declined by an average of 11% from Tuesday's season opener in the adult demo. "Idol" hadn't grown post-premiere since 2004.

"The little changes we're making are having a big impact," Fox president of alternative Mike Darnell said. "To be up in the demo and to be (near) 100% audience retention from last year in this environment for the biggest show on TV? That's fantastic." (partialdiff)
