Idris Elba to Go Racing for New Discovery Series
The four-part show will see the actor take on rally-driving, street-racing, aerobatics and power-boating
Produced by Shine North and Elba's own production company, Green Door Pictures, the show, which has the working title The Idris Elba Project, will see the actor attempt to master rally-driving, street-racing, aerobatics and power-boating, while also understanding the engineering, science and history behind the sports.
The series of four hourlong episodes will be shot across the U.K., Florida and California. It is due to air in mid-2015 across more than 220 countries and territories, including the U.S.
"I'm taking on the toughest racing challenges of my life for this new Discovery TV series," said Elba in announcing the project on Monday. "Along the way, I'll meet extraordinary individuals, spectacular machines and hear amazing stories of how far people go to satisfy their love of speed. The extreme challenges will take me right out of my comfort zone as I compete against the best on land, water and in the air."
Susanna Dinnage, executive vp and managing director at Discovery Networks UK & Ireland, added: "This landmark series will take viewers on a journey with Idris to experience the adrenalin rush and thrill of speed, a passion for him and our audience."
Victoria Noble is the executive producer for Discovery, with Rick Murray serving as the executive producer for Shine North. Shine North and Green Door Pictures struck an exclusive factual programming deal earlier this year.
