Elle Fanning in 'Mary Shelley'

The period romance from groundbreaking Saudi director Haifaa Al-Mansour first premiered in Toronto.

IFC has picked up Mary Shelley, the period romance from Saudi director Haifaa Al-Mansour that first bowed in Toronto.

Starring Elle Fanning (The Beguiled) as Mary Shelley together with Douglas Booth (Loving Vincent), Bel Powley (The Diary of a Teenage Girl), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Tom Sturridge (Far From the Madding Crowd) and Ben Hardy (X-Men: Apocalypse), Mary Shelley tells the story of the acclaimed Gothic novelist's whirlwind — and scandalous — romance with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. When tragedy strikes and the couple lose their baby daughter, Mary strikes back, finding the courage and bravery to transform her pain into the world’s first science fiction novel, Frankenstein — and all by the age of 18.

The film — Al-Mansour's first English-language feature after her groundbreaking debut, Wadjda — is based on a screenplay by Emma Jensen. Mary Shelley was produced by Amy Baer (Last Vegas) through Gidden Media together with Ruth Coady (The Siege of Jadotville) and Alan Moloney (Albert Nobbs) through Parallel Film Productions.

The deal was negotiated between IFC Films and the UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers, together with HanWay Films.

In addition to the previously announced deals in the U.K. (Curzon) and Canada (Search Engine), HanWay Films has also closed deals with: Pyramide (France), Prokino (Germany and Austria), Notorious (Italy), Filmax International (Spain), Paradiso (Benelux), NonStop (Scandinavia), GAGA (Japan), Transmission (Australia/New Zealand), Challan (South Korea), Capella (CIS), Discovery (former Yugoslavia), Odeon (Greece and Cyprus), Lusomundo (Portugal), Front Row (Middle East), Ster-Kinekor (South Africa), Edko Films (Hong Kong), Datang (China), Fabula (Turkey) and Jaguar (Airlines).

"The entire IFC Films team fell hard for this film in Toronto and can’t wait for moviegoers to see Elle Fanning in one of her best performances," said Jonathan Sehring and Lisa Schwartz, co-presidents of Sundance Selects/IFC Films. "Haifaa Al-Mansour has made a stunning film about a young woman who takes her destiny into her own hands, and we’re thrilled for audiences to be able to experience it with the same joy we did."
