I.G., Fuji team for 'Island' CG feature

TOKYO -- Leading anime house Production I.G. is teaming with Fuji TV, Japan's biggest network, for a full-length 3-D CG feature, "Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror," aimed at the global market.

Production I.G. ("Ghost in the Shell," "The Sky Crawlers") has been working for three years on combining the kind of 3-D digital techniques seen in big-budget Hollywood animation with Japanese anime sensibilities through technology that converts hand-drawn images into video.

The project will be the first anime helmed by live-action director and screenwriter Shinsuke Sato.

Domestic release is slated for summer 2009, with Toho distributing and a likely international bow at the Festival de Cannes.
