IIFA Awards head to Bangkok

NEW DELHI -- The ninth annual International Indian Film Academy Awards will be held June 6-8 at Bangkok's Siam Niramit complex, with top nominations going to such titles as hockey caper "Come On! India" and romantic comedy "When We Met."

The IIFAs are organized by Mumbai-based event management company Wizcraft Entertainment and are only held in locations outside India, moving annually to locations including the U.K., South Africa, Malaysia, Holland and Singapore.

"While Indian films are popular in other countries, it's really when the IIFAs are held in a particular country that the market actually opens up in terms of Indian films getting mainstream releases," Wizcraft and IIFA director Sabbas Joseph said in an interview Wednesday.

Joseph added that in recent years, "over 30 Indian films have been shot in Thailand but none of them have been released via mainstream distribution. We hope that the IIFAs will bring more attention to our films in this market as well."

The IIFAs will showcase some major titles, including the world premiere of "Sarkar Raj," starring iconic actor and IIFA patron Amitabh Bachchan.
