Gimlet Media is making good on its plans to ramp up film and television production.

The podcast company's entertainment arm, Gimlet Pictures, has hired Justin McGoldrick as its first development executive.

The Illumination Entertainment and Montecito Picture Co. veteran will lead development of feature and TV projects based on Gimlet's podcast franchises. He will be based in Los Angeles and report to Gimlet Pictures head Chris Giliberti.

As a creative executive at Illumination since 2016, McGoldrick worked on such animated projects as Minions, Sing and The Secret Life of Pets. At Montecito, he was involved in the all-female Ghostbusters remake. He began his career as an assistant to Nicole David at WME.

McGoldrick joins Gimlet during a pivotal year for the company's film and TV efforts. Alex, Inc., the company's first effort to license its IP to television, was cancelled after one season on ABC. But it has multiple other projects lined up, including Amazon's adaptation of the scripted podcast Homecoming starring Julia Roberts, a project in which Gimlet took a more active producing role. The series, which is set to bow Nov. 2, was directed by Sam Esmail and executive produced and written by Homecoming creators Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg. Gimlet Pictures also has set the comedy Sandra at Paul Lee's wiip and has an episode of Reply All in development as a feature film from director Richard Linklater and starring Robert Downey Jr.

Gimlet formalized its traditional entertainment efforts in January with the creation of Gimlet Pictures. Giliberti noted at the time that he was looking for a Los Angeles-based development executive to work with him and Horowitz, who serves as a creative advisor to the group.

Four-year-old Gimlet was founded by Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber. Its slate of podcasts include StartUp, Reply All, Homecoming, The Nod and Heavyweight
