Imax, CineStar Strike Deal for Second Theater in Germany

After doing big business with "Gravity" at the Sony Center multiplex in Berlin, the partners will add a screen in Karlsruhe.

TORONTO -- Imax and German exhibitor CineStar Cinemas have followed up their Sony Center multiplex screen in Berlin, which opened in June, by agreeing to add another theater in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Imax had pacted on the revenue-sharing giant screen for the CineStar Sony Center multiplex at Potsdamer Platz in the German capital, which did big business with Gravity.

Now the agreement will be expanded to another Imax theater to be installed at the Filmpalast am ZKM complex in Karlsruhe, the companies said Tuesday.

"With today's agreement, we are building on the tremendous success of our existing Imax theater, which has already strengthened the complex's overall box office and ranked as the number one screen in Germany for Gravity," said Oliver Fock, managing director of film for CineStar.

The Cinestar deal also builds on Imax's long-standing model to establish an anchor theater with a major exhibitor and follow up with satellite screen deals.

As with the Sony Center screen, the Imax theater at the Filmpalast complex will eventually use next-generation laser digital projection technology now in the works.
