Imax, Germany's Cinestar to Debut Giant Screen in Berlin Multiplex

The Potsdamer Platz addition is part of the large format exhibitor's ongoing expansion beyond North America into the world market.

TORONTO – Imax and German exhibitor CineStar Cinemas are pacting on a revenue-sharing giant screen to be added to the CineStar Sony Centre multiplex at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin.

The subsidiary of Australia’s Amalgamated Holdings will eventually fit its flagship Berlin theater with a next generation laser digital projection system now in development.

"We are delighted to partner with Germany's number-one exhibitor and are particularly excited about bringing Imax to the landmark CineStar Sony Centre in Berlin, which is home to many of Germany's major film premieres," said Imax EMEA president Andrew Cripps, as he continues the giant screen exhibitor’s European expansion.

The Imax deal will also see Event Cinemas, another Amalgamated Holdings subsidiary, install the laser digital projection technology in a flagship Imax theater in Auckland.
