Imax inks five-theater deal in Thailand

Thai exhibitor Major Cineplex is country's leading operator

TORONTO -- Continuing its drive into the Asian market, Imax Corp. on Friday unveiled an order from Thai exhibitor Major Cineplex for five more super-sized digital theater systems.

The leading exhibitor in Thailand opened the country's first Imax theater at the Siam Paragon multiplex in Bangkok, and now will launch two new screens in the capital city by October.

The additional three theaters will go into upcoming multiplexes, which in Thailand often land in shopping malls.

Toronto-based Imax has so far in 2010 signed deals for 40 new theater systems in Asia.

Major Cineplex operates 363 screens at 49 locations in Thailand, on top of movie production and distribution businesses through a M Pictures Entertainment division.
