Imax Signs Two-Theater Deal in South Africa
The agreement for additional screens in Pretoria and Johannesburg follows Ster-Kinekor launching an anchor site in Durban.
TORONTO – Imax is expanding its presence in South Africa after inking a two-theater deal with Ster-Kinekor Theaters.
The division of Primedia Group will add a theater to an upcoming multiplex in Pretoria East, and a second to another new multiplex in Johannesburg, to bring its stable of Imax theaters to three.
Ster-Kinekor opened an initial Imax screen in Durban nine months ago.
The latest agreement with the South African exhibitor is part of a strategy by Imax, led by Andrew Cripps, president of Imax EMEA, to expand beyond the North American market into new emerging world markets.
"South Africa was one of a number of new countries that we entered in 2013, which also included Germany, Switzerland and Portugal, and it is clear there is a growing appetite for Imax in the market," Cripps said on Wednesday in a statement.
Ster-Kinekor Theaters operates 54 commercial cinemas in South Africa, with five additional sites in Lesotho, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
