Imax Unveils Four-Theatre India Deal
Indian cinema chain PVR Cinemas acquires four theatres from big screen exhibitor.
TORONTO – Imax Corp. is to sell four big screen theatres to Indian exhibitor PVR Cinemas as part of its international digital roll-out.
The deal came as Toronto-based Imax reported that Warner Bros. Pictures’ Sucker Punch brought in $4 million in gross box office on its opening weekend, ahead of the picture opening on 80 international screens in the coming months.
Under the terms of the PVR Cinemas sales deal, an initial two theatres will go into multiplexes in Mumbai and Bangalore in the next year, with another two in locations due for locations still to be determined.
PVR Cinemas currently operates 142 screens in 18 cities in India. The four-theatre agreement follows multi-theatre deals unveiled by Imax in Russia and China in the last 10 days.
