The film received the widest release for a Hollywood title and already has passed the coveted one billion rupee ($17 million) mark.

Within its first week of release, Fast and Furious 7 has crossed the one billion rupee ($17 million) mark, the local standard for any high performing film.

Universal Films India gave the movie the widest release ever for a Hollywood title, releasing it April 3 across 2,800 screens, which included dubbed language versions. Last summer's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 from Sony Pictures was released with more than 1,500 prints, which at the time was considered the widest for a Hollywood film.

Furious 7 also beat Spider-Man 2 in achieving the highest grossing weekend for a Hollywood title, taking an estimated $11.7 million. Spiderman 2 collected $6.9 million during its opening weekend.

Furious 7 features a cameo by Bollywood actor Ali Fazal, who appears in the film's sequences shot in Abu Dhabi. Universal Films India's Facebook page carried a thank-you video message from Fazal on the film's strong box- office run in India.

As for his experience working on the film, Fazal recollected shooting with the late Paul Walker.

"I first met Paul on the first day of the shoot.... It was his birthday I believe. And I just remember the scene took six takes because it was just funny. And Paul and Vin Diesel wouldn't stop laughing while I took my dialogs.... Paul was one sweet genius," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

Fazal also said that "the best tribute to Paul is the fact that this movie has been made and completed and will be remembered for time to come."
