India wants own Emmy Awards

MUMBAI -- An Indian edition of the Emmy Awards could be in the offing for next year if talks pan out, a Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry executive said Tuesday.

"We are in discussions with the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to establish an Indian Emmy Awards with an Indian jury. Additionally, we are thinking of having an Indian section in the main Emmy awards, but these details are still being finalized," Kunal Dasgupta, FICCI entertainment committee co-chairman and Sony Entertainment Television India CEO, said in an interview on the sidelines of the Frames conference.

Dasgupta added that the FICCI-Emmy India Awards could take place next year "if our discussions yield results." Details such as categories and voting procedures are on the agenda.

In recent years, Indian TV industry professionals have been included as Emmy jurors, which Dasgupta said "reflects our ongoing relationship with the Emmys. But with India-specific awards, we would like to make a deeper connection."
