Indian TV bows local 'Cash Cab'

Bindass channel taps Munish Makhija as host

NEW DELHI -- A local version of "Cash Cab," the Emmy-winning international game show played out in a taxi, bows Monday in India on the Bindass channel owned by Mumbai-based diversified media group UTV.

The Indian version of the show that first launched in the U.K. in 2005 and airs on Discovery in the U.S., will follow suit, offering unsuspecting passengers in a special taxi the chance to win up to $500 (20,000 rupees) by correctly answering a series of trivia questions as they are driven around Mumbai to their destination.

"Cash Cab -- Meter Chalu Hai" (The Meter Is Running) will be hosted by Munish Makhija, reviving the rustic North Indian villager character called Udham Singh that made him famous in the late 1990s as a presenter on Star India's music outlet Channel V.
