Indian Version of 'Hollywood Squares' Set for Fox's Star India, Digital Platform Viu
CBS' long-running game show will see a South Indian language version called 'Tollywood Squares.'
The Hollywood Squares is coming to India, the first time the iconic game show is getting a local version.
Hosted by film and television actor Navdeep Pallapolu, the show goes live on Jan. 27.
The show will be in the South Indian Telugu language and is titled Tollywood Squares. It will simultaneously air on Star Maa, the Telugu-language entertainment channel part of Fox's Star India network, and stream on digital platform Viu owned by Hong Kong-based telco PCCW.
Tollywood Squares is a partnership between Viu's parent Vuclip, Star Maa, advertising major GroupM's Motion Content Group and boutique investment firm Morris Street Advisors, which acquired the format rights to Hollywood Squares from CBS Studios International for India.
Like the original show, which ran for 26 seasons on NBC and then CBS, Tollywood Squares will be based on tic-tac-toe and showcase nine new celebrities and two new contestants in each episode. As of 2017, there have been over 20 localized versions of the hit game show.
"Hollywood Squares has had success in many countries around the world, and we're convinced it will appeal to viewers in India," said Roxanne Lettman Pompa, CBS Studios International vp international sales and production.
