India's Most Successful Film Ever 'PK' Set For China Release

The record breaking hit starring Aamir Khan opens May 22 in over 3,500 screens.

India's most successful film PK is set for release in China on May 22.

The film was released in India last December by Walt Disney India's UTV Motion Pictures unit and went on to make box office history as the first local film to cross the $100 million mark.

Starring Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, PK tells the story of an alien (Khan) who lands in India and ends up questioning religious dogma and traditions. For the Chinese dubbed version, Wang Baoqiang (Lost in Thailand, Personal Tailor) voices Khan's character.

As announced earlier by Disney-UTV, PK is the first film acquired directly from India by state owned China Film Group and Huaxia Film Group.
PK saw a gala premiere Wednesday in Shanghai attended by Khan and the film's director Raju Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

This will be the second film to open in China from the trio of Khan, Hirani and Chopra following their runaway comedy hit 3 Idiots which was released in 2011.

Indian films are gradually gaining a foothold in the competitive Chinese movie market, the second biggest in the world. In February, Bollywood hit Happy New Year, co-produced by and featuring Shah Rukh Khan, was released via China Film Group and 1905 Pictures, the film distribution arm of China Central Television Movie Channel.
Last July saw the release of another Aamir Khan starrer, 2013 action caper Dhoom:3, from veteran Bollywood banner Yash Raj Films. The title was released via distribution company HGC Entertainment.
