'India's Got Talent' gets June start

Simon Cowell format features director Kapur

NEW DELHI -- “India's Got Talent,” the local version of Simon Cowell's hit global format, will air here in June on Viacom18's Hindi channel Colors, according to an announcement Friday.

Hosted by MTV India VJs Nikhil Chinappa and Ayushman Khurana, the show's three-member jury include director Shekhar Kapur (“Elizabeth”) and Bollywood actresses Sonali Bendre and Kirron Kher.

Auditions began in early April from which contestants will be shortlisted.

Unlike fellow jurors, this is Kapur's first time as a jury member on a reality show. “It is exciting to be a part of the show that showcases everything from the predictable to the bizarre...Judging a show that follows no set format is usually very challenging. But that is what makes this experience a lot more intriguing.”

Launched last July, Colors recently dislodged market leader Star's Hindi channel Star Plus from its  unchallenged, decade-plus reign as the top-rated channel here. In addition to its range of domestic dramas, Colors has also featured local versions of “Fear Factor” and “Big Brother.”
