The Valentine's Day awards ceremony — honoring makeup artist Rick Baker, hairstylist Kathryn Blondell and director Guillermo del Toro — showed plenty of love to Hollywood's top artisans.

It takes a special event to pull more than 500 of the Hollywood’s top makeup artists, hair stylists, execs and talent away from Valentine’s Day festivities, but the annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards, held on Saturday night in Los Angeles, did just that.

Held at the Paramount Studios Lot, the black-tie awards show — hosted by sitcom star Wendi McLendon-Covey of The Goldbergs (ABC) — feted outstanding hair and makeup achievements for members of the Local 706 guild across categories ranging from television to motion movies, commercials and music videos.

"You have to have a passion for movies and understand characters, and you have to learn your craft," Kathryn Blondell told Pret-a-Reporter, before stepping onstage to accept her Hair Stylist Lifetime Achievement Award for work on iconic films including Harold and Maude, Cast Away (Tom Hanks' crazy I’m-stuck-on-an-island, sun-bleached dreadlocks, anyone?) and The Great Gatsby, for Leonardo DiCaprio's slicked hair.

Other awards recipients included Oscar-winner Rick Baker, who was presented with a Makeup Lifetime Achievement Award by Animal House director John Landis for his groundbreaking body of work that runs the gamut from Michael Jackson: Thriller to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Planet of the Apes, Hellboy, and Maleficent.

Special-effects-loving director Guillermo del Toro accepted the Distinguished Artisan Achievement Award from longtime friend and collaborator, FX’s Sons of Anarchy star Ron Perlman, while actors including Alfre Woodard, Darby Stanchfield, Sarah Paulson and Jamie Brewer (fresh off her New York Fashion Week runway debut) presented awards to winners for their transformative work in movies such as Birdman and Guardians of the Galaxy and TV shows like PBS Masterpiece’s Downton Abbey and The Walking Dead on AMC. "So everyone can enjoy their moment, we asked Kanye not to come," said Paulson laughingly.

Accepting her award in Best Contemporary Hair Styling for ABC's Dancing with the Stars, Mary Guerrero joked, “With all the A-list hairstylists and makeup artists here, Hollywood must be looking a little shabby tonight."
