Int'l Union of Cinemas launches summit

UNIC represents theater owners in 17 countries

CANNES -- International Union of Cinemas the UNIC will launch a new European Cinema Summit bringing together Europe's movie theater owners, distributors and major industry players for a three-day popcorn-filled event set to kick off in Brussels June 16, 2009.

The UNIC represents national theater owners federations in 17 countries across Europe and beyond (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Italy, the U.K., Norway, Holland, Switzerland, Israel, Luxembourg, Hungary, Greece, Irland) in addition to international companies Europalaces, Kinepolis, UGC and Utopolis Group for a total of 900 million theater seats and 28,000 screens.

"UNIC wishes to offer a meeting accessible to all European theater owners, responding perfectly to all their expectations and needs in terms of information and cross-professional exchanges," the organization said in a statement.

The summit will feature debates with topics such as digital cinema, piracy and new media.

The first edition of the ECS will be held at the Kinepolis Theater in Brussels on June 16-18, 2009. Organizers plan to move the event to a different territory each year.
